Dewey's October 2025 Readathon

I haven't done a 24 hour readathon in a long time, but I thought it might be fun to participate this year for my birthday (which is on Sunday). These five books are my priority reads, but I have lots more books on my Kindle and comics I checked out from Hoopla on my TBR as well.

Opening Survey:

1) Will you be reading from home? If not, are you traveling somewhere specifically for the Readathon?

I will be reading from my home in Oakville, Ontario.

2) Is anyone else going to be reading with you in person? If not, will you be alone and have peace and quiet?

I'm going to be alone, so I will have peace and quiet and hopefully read a lot.

3) Do you have food and drink planned and acquired?

I have a lot of snacks: pumpkin bread, cheese strings, Halloween candy, spinach dip and my favourite iced chai latte concentrate.

4) Do you have a TBR planned or are you winging it?

I have a TBR, but I have so many items on it that I'll kind of be winging it because I still have a lot of books to choose from. My physical TBR will be my priority because it only has five books, but I made a readathon folder on my Kindle and added about 30 books to it, and I borrowed a bunch of comics and graphic novels from Hoopla for today.

Horror Galore: 300 Fantastic Fright Flicks You Might Have Missed by Nathaniel Tolle

I watch a lot of horror movies and I'm always on the lookout for hidden gems. This book has tons of films I've never heard of before, and the ones I've already seen I've loved. Plus, anyone who appreciates the genius that is Basket Case 2 has a trustworthy opinion.

I love reading books with horror movie recommendations, but I always find that the movies suggested are more serious fare, while I'm more into cheesy, so-bad-they're-good movies. I'm so happy to have found a book that has recommendations for both! Whatever your personal preference, this book has a horror film for you. And they're divided into sections based on specific subgenres (like How to Cook Forty Humans and More Reasons to Get a Vasectomy), so it's easy to find whatever you're in the mood for.

I noticed a bunch of the movies mentioned are available for free on Tubi and I plan on using this book as my Tubi movie guide, because I never know if the horror movies on there will be good bad or bad bad. I've already watched a few movies recommended in the book and they were weird and cheesy in the best possible way. I can't wait to watch more!

Readathon Wrap-up

I fell asleep around 6:00 am I think. So, I almost made it to the end. I think I spent more time on the hourly Instagram challenges than I did reading, but I still had fun.

Books read: Spook by Jane Little, Susannah and the Poison Green Halloween by Patricia Elmore, The Bailey School Kids: Aliens Don't Carve Jack-o'-lanterns by Debbie Dadey and Marcia Thornton Jones, Baby-sitters Little Sister: Karen's Pumpkin Patch by Ann M. Martin, Two of a Kind Diaries: Dare to Scare by Judy Katschke, Goosebumps Series 2000: Headless Halloween by R.L. Stine, Sweet Valley Twins: The Haunted Burial Ground by Jamie Suzanne, and half of The Baby-sitters Club: Baby-sitters' Fright Night by Ann M. Martin.

Total pages read: 843

Closing Survey

  1. How would you assess your reading overall? I didn't read all the books in my stack and I gave into distractions. It wasn't the most I've ever read during a readathon, but overall I think I did OK.
  2. Did you have a strategy, and if so, did you stick to it? Not really, just to read as much as possible.
  3. What was your favorite snack? My homemade pumpkin bread turned out well.

Readathon Wrap-Up

I did it! I stayed up the whole 24 hours, but I was too tired to post my wrap-up at 8:00 am. I fell asleep right away and have been sleeping most of the day. The fire alarm went off in my apartment building at 2:00 am and I was like, "good, now I won't fall asleep!" But I also couldn't concentrate on reading either. My building didn't burn down or anything, there are false alarms all the time, to the point that I'm never worried and if there was actually a fire I could probably die because I would just ignore the alarm.

Books read: Dollies by Pat Graversen, The Charming by Jane Polcovar, Evil on the Bayou by Richie Tankersley Cusick, Cheerleaders: The Evil Lives! by R.L. Stine, Bury Me Deep by Christopher Pike, Ghost World by Daniel Clowes

Total pages read: 1054

Closing Survey

1. How would you assess your reading overall?

I only read six books and one of them wasn't even on my TBR, but I think 1054 pages is pretty good. I never read that much on an average day.

2. Did you have a strategy, and if so,  did you stick to it?

Not really, just to read as much as possible.

3. What was your favourite snack?

I ordered pizza from Papa John's for the first time and I loved it!

4. Did you add any new books to your TBR/wishlist after seeing what everyone else is reading?

Yeah, I always do.

5. What was your favourite book or experience from this readathon?

Ghost World by Daniel Clowes--I thought it was hilarious.

Mid-Event Survey

 1. What are you reading right now?

Bury Me Deep by Christopher Pike

2. How many books have you read so far?

One and a half. I wanted to finish Dollies by Pat Graversen before I started on my TBR and I still had quite a bit left, so that took most of the day. I'm halfway through Bury Me Deep.

3. What book are you most looking forward to for the second half of the Read-a-thon?

Cheerleaders: The Evil Lives by R.L. Stine. I still haven't read that yet, despite mentioning how much I'm looking forward to it in my previous post.

4. Have you had many interruptions? How did you deal with those?

I've been spending a lot of time taking photos for the Instagram challenges and have given into other distractions instead of reading.

5. What surprises you most about the Read-a-thon, so far?

How little I've read. I'm going to focus more in the second half and hopefully get more books read.

Dewey's Readathon

Today's the day! It's Dewey's Readathon and I'm excited to spend 24 hours reading. I chose pretty much all young adult and middle grade books this time because I had a lot of fun reading those during the last readathon.

Bruschetta

4. Tell us a little something about yourself!

I'm obsessed with thrifting and that's how I bought all of the books in my stack. I also work in a thrift store and I get a 50% discount on books.

5. If you participated in the last readathon, what's something different you'll do today?

I want to read the most I ever have during a readathon.

1. How would you assess your reading overall?

Dewey's Reverse Readathon

Tonight I'm going to be participating in Dewey's Reverse Readathon, which starts at 8:00 pm instead of at 8:00 am, like the readathon normally does. I did have to work today, so I'll probably fall asleep at some point tonight because I'm already feeling tired.

5. If you participated in the last readathon, what's one thing you'll do different today?

I might allow myself to sleep instead of forcing myself to stay up the whole 24 hours because I had to work today, so I'm pretty tired.

Dewey's Readathon Wrap-Up

Total pages read: 568
Books read: Monster, She Wrote by Lisa Kroger and Melanie R. Anderson, and Horrorstor by Grady Hendrix

I sort of made it to the end. I stayed up until 8:00 am, but I fell asleep for a couple hours earlier in the day because I didn't sleep well on Friday night, so I didn't really read the full 24 hours.

I only ended up reading two books, Monster, She Wrote by Lisa Kroger and Melanie R. Anderson, and Horrorstor by Grady Hendrix. I enjoyed both and would definitely recommend them. I now have a long list of horror books and stories written by women that I want to check out thanks to Monster, She Wrote. Horrorstor was a quick read and a lot of fun.

Closing Survey

1. How would you assess your reading overall?

I didn't end up reading as much as I would have liked because I kept getting distracted, but I read more than I did last readathon and I'm happy with that.

2. Did you have a strategy, and if so, did you stick to it?

I didn't really have a strategy, I just tried to read as much as I could, but I gave into distractions pretty easily.

3. What was your favourite snack?

I ordered pizza from Little Caesars and it was really good. I especially love their Italian cheese bread. Yum.

Dewey's Readathon

My TBR for the day...hopefully I can get through a few of these

Monster, She Wrote by Lisa Kroger and Melanie R. Anderson
Horrorstor by Grady Hendrix

My stash of discount Easter candy in a festive Halloween bowl

Opening Survey

1. What fine part of the world are you reading from today?

Oakville, Ontario, Canada

2. Which book in your stack are you most looking forward to?

Horrorstor by Grady HendrixI've loved all his other books, so I'm hoping I'll love this one too.

I want to post more updates in my blog, but I also want to read more, and those are two conflicting goals, so we shall see.
